A year, one day at a time. Day 19/Week 3

Did 2.60 miles in 45 minutes with 4'00" @ 5mph run.  Now I am getting my running up there I feel that the workout are more intense.  I even have to put my Cho-Pat knee brace on for my left knee.  My right sciatic nerve is giving me fits again, which I think is from the fast walking.  I have a sciatic nerve stretch that really works but I hate doing it because it is so uncomfortable.  I'm not doing to bad for only having 13 days of working out in.  My bod's still not liking the workouts but I am doing it.  Try this:  Workout the first week for 5 days with 2 days of rest.  The second week:  Workout for 5 days with 2 days of rest.  This should start a muscle memory patern to the point that you want to workout

A year, one day at a time. Day 18/Week 3

No workout Monday because I felt so bad.  Did workout on Tuesday with 2.26 miles in 40 minutes with a 3'45" @ 5mph run.  On Wednesday we went to SL for Doug Curtis's funeral.  He was married to Jill for a long time and we got to know the kids quite well.  Nice seeing them again.  Nice to see Joette's family with the 2 great grandchildren.

A year, one day at a time. Day 15/Week 3

Ended up the weekend with no exercise at all.  Pain and swelling causing me grief so no cycling over the weekend.  Yesterday we went for a Sunday ride up Manti Canyon to the Skyline Drive then down Ephriam Canyon.  In our truck we had Carolyn, Heather, Bella, Evie and myself.  Kenny and Grandma followed in the Rav.  Had to go up around the Jet Fox Lake snowdrift, which involved a wee bit of 4 wheeling.  Fun for everyone except Carolyn and Bella.  Kenny's Rav isn't built for that type road either, but did get thru without breaking.  We stopped in Ephraim and had Subway for dinner.  Saturday Carolyn bought the kids a small swimming pool and Evie told her she was the best Grammy in the whole wide world.  Gota love little kids.  I increased my mileage to 13.55miles, a mile more than last week.  Still picking up my time running each day by 15" and Friday I was up to a 3'30"@ 5mph run.  So I shouldn't complain.   I will get back to exercising today.  Will take it a day at a time so I don't set myself up for failure.

A year, one day at a time. Day 14/Week 2

I ended up the last couple of day with some pretty good swelling and more pain than I wanted.  So Sat. went to Richfield and did some shopping.   No cycling when I hurt this bad.  Sad because this is the weekend of the MS ride in Logan and I really wanted to do that ride.  A friend went up to SL on Friday and pickup the our Cyprus Credit Union Cycling Jerseys.  Nice bright orange that will stand out when ride the highway.  Next year will be in better shape and we will have reservations at a hotel for a couple nights so I can ride both days.  Keep working out when you can

A year, one day at a time. Day 13/Week 2

Yesterdays workout was pretty tough on me.  I had to push to get through it.  I did 2.64 miles in 45 minutes with 3"30" of running at 5mph.  I hurt so bad today I am taking a rest day.  I wanted to cycle both days but I do need to listen to my body.  When you can't hardly move it's time to rest.  I want it to start getting easier

A year, one day at a time. Day 12/Week 2

I did 2.66 miles in 45 minutes with  3'15" @ 5mph run.  What I have to realize is on 8/8/11 was when I came down with arthritis.  Even though it wasn't diagnosed until 3 or so month later.  The exercise was hit and miss from August on.  So I can't beat myself up to much for not being in very good shape.  I need to stay patient and work thru this using baby steps to make it a rest of my life way of life.

For day 10 I did 2.25 miles in 40 minutes with 3'00" @ 5mph of running.  I wish I could say it was getting easier but I can't.  I need to plan time for weight lifting because I have no strength in my upper body.  Keep up the good work

A year, one day at a time. Week 2/Day 10

Day 9 was a 45 minute workout for 2.84 miles.  After warming up with a walk of 1 miles I did a timed run  of 2'45" @ 5mph.  My feet have been bothering me and I don't know if it's breaking in the new shoes or the arthritis in my feet.  I can't wait to get in 3 miles a workout so I have that feeling of accomplishment that I need so much.  Having trouble coming up with positive, inspirational, transforming thought provoking material to put down in this blog.  Working out has always been my salvation when I am down.  I am strong and I will come back, just wait and see

A year, one day at a time. Day 9/Week 2

Did 2.16 miles in 38 minutes with a 2'30"@ 5mph run.  I want and need some motivation.  I almost convinced myself not to workout yesterday.  I was sore, I was tired, I didn't feel all that good.  But at the end of the day I grabbed my stuff and headed to the aerobic room.  As usual once I got started things were ok.  My goal of weight loss isn't cutting it, I need something else.  I have always had a new distance to run like going from 5k's to 10k's up to 50 milers.  Road running to trail running.  I had a goal to lift 300 lbs. before I turned 60 and I did that.  If I could get into the cycling there is a whole bunch of distances and terrains to ride.  Will ride this weekend and see if I can get motivated with the cycling.  Just exercise

A year, one day at a time. Day 8 Week 2

I completed a good week!    Walk/Run for 12.19 miles and Cycled for 5.27 miles.  I didn't set the world on fire with my running.  I did it on time, got up to 2'15" @ 5mph, which was a good start.    I had planned five days of working out and got in 6.  I took Sunday off.  I figured the cycling would be easy on me but I was wrong.  Pain assessment on a scale of 1 to 10 this morning is an 8 after a IB 800.  Sucks.  I know that some of it is from working out when I am not in very good shape and some of it is arthritis.  I will keep working out and hope the pain subsides to a tolerable level because when the pain is bad I get very ornery.  I have gained weight everyday since I started working out.  228.2 to 232.6 today.  It might be water gain from the swelling that I have going on.  Carolyn put in a lot of hard work cooking great food over the weekend, which made Fathers Day wonderful.  She takes good care of me.  Looking forward to this week because I think it will let me know how working out will effect my future

A year, one day at a time. Day 7

Just a quick post.  I road the bicycle around Manti yesterday for 5.27 miles in 39 minutes.  I hurt a little from riding but need a longer ride to know for sure just how I handle it.  I do know that I can do short ride and that is wonderful.  So 6 workout in a row.  Can you say compulsive obsessive anyone

A year, one day at a time. Day 6

Yesterday I had a little more time for my workout.  Did the treadmill for 3.13 miles for 50 minutes and did 2'15" @ 5mph.  My plan was to do a shorter workout but that fell by the wayside as I started my walk.  I just can't get off thinking that if I don't to at least 3 miles I haven't accomplished much.  So 5 days in a row is great.  My body hurts but, not that much more.  The pain I can handle it's being tired all the time that is the problem.  I am tired when I wake up in the morning and I don't want to get out of bed.  I hope this changes as I get in better shape.  I'm doing it.  Where are you?

A year, one day at a time. Day 5

I am sore and tired.  I can't believe how out of shape I am.  Day 4, I treadmilled it for 2.41 miles in 40 minutes with a jog of 2'00" @ 5mph.  I am going to have to start watching what I eat because I'm gaining weight.  Since I weighed in Monday, even with the workouts, I've gained 1.6 pounds.  I am trying to think of 5 reasons why I am torturing myself to get in shape.  1.  When I weigh less I feel better!  2.  It is easier for me to move my body.  3.  My blood pressure is normal.  4.  Clothes fit better.  5.  And the one for my ego,  I look better,  which gives me an all around better attitude.  So all the pain and suffering will have rewards if I stay with it.  I need to get the bike out this weekend so I can test out how my body will handle the position on the road bike.  We will see

A year, one day at a time. Day 4

Yesterday I got in 2.23 miles in 37 minutes and did my 1'45" of running at 5 mph.  It feels good to be exercising again.  About 5 or so weeks ago Dr. Call put me on Cymbalta for pain relief.  The first week I couldn't tell much difference.  The second week I noticed the pain wasn't as bad and the 3rd week there was a remarkable difference.  I'm thinking how great this is when I start to notice that when I urinate there is not much flow.  It becoming obvious that something is wrong when I am constantly going to the restroom and not producing much.  I am thinking Prostrate already when I start noticing other problems associated with the Prostrate happening.  I start wondering what has changed in my life to bring on these problems.  The only thing I can think of is the Cymbalta.  I check it out on the internet and sure enough the symptoms I have are listed there in the web site.  So I stop the med. and in one week the urine is flowing normal again.  After the second week everything else is back to normal.  Cymbalta was wonderful for the pain and made me feel almost human again but the side effects are not worth it.  I am back to IB 800 again.  Will see Dr. Call in a month and a half.  We will have another discussion on how to proceed with my treatment for the Arthritis.  As far a being out of shape and having some pain and way to much tiredness I think I am handling the exercise rather well.  Look out Marathons, here I come

A year, one day at a time. Day 3

Yesterday got in 2.61 miles in 45 minutes and did my 1'30" running time.  I hurt a little more than normal today.  45 minutes might be a little much each day just starting out.  I did my exercise and stretches, then got in the car and road up to Provo and back.  I think the combo of ex. and riding is why I am so sore.  I am very motivated, will stay that way.  My weight is confusing me somewhat.  Monday I was 228.2 and this morning I am 229.6 for a gain of 1.4 pounds.  I didn't eat that much yesterday.  That is why it is confusing.  I'll give it a week to get my body settled in because I know by body is messed up.  Have you all gave any thought as to what you want you body to look like when your 63 years old.  I hope you have, because what you are doing to it now will have a lot to do with it when your my age.  The yo yo dieting I've did has hurt, in a big way.

A year, one day at a time, Day 2

I don't know if anyone will notice or not but I changed my beginning weight.  When I weighed myself the last of May I was 233.8.  When I got on the scales this morning I was 228.2.  Somewhere along the way I lost 5 pounds,  so I changed my starting weight to 228.2.  I got in a little bit of walk/run yesterday on the treadmill.  35 minutes for 1.81 miles and I actually stretched after. I will get into how I am feeling later on in my blog.  But, as far as yesterday goes, my body doesn't hurt any more than normal.  When I run on the treadmill I started with one minute @ 5mph.  Yesterday and from now on I will increase only by 15 seconds on each run.  So yesterday I ran 1'15" @ 5mph and will increase today to 1'30" @ 5mph.  It might seem like a slow process, but I have to give my body a chance to adjust to running again.  Lets make our bodies get active everyday we can for at least 30 minutes to start with

A year, one day at a time. Day 1

I decided to wait until today to start my new adventure.  Again my lofty goal is to lose 23 pounds.  I will accomplish this by working out 5 days a week.  My exercises will be walking, hiking, running, cycling, swimming and weight lifting.  Gives me plenty of diversity so I shouldn't get bored.  If you are having a hard time logging into my web site, please let me know.  I know some of you are and I might have to start a new one.  So here I go again.  Just Run, Just exercise, Just do something active and it will pay off in the long run

Almost a month

Almost a month since I last posted.  The bathroom is done, (beautiful), and Brandon is getting ready to leave for Korea.  It will be hard on him and his family to be apart for all this time.  We will do all we can, but no one can replace dad and husband part of the family.  Brandon wants for all of us to set a goal and work on it while he is gone.  I will do my goal in two parts.   June 6th until he gets home in December or Januarry for leave and from when he leaves again till he's done in Korea.  We have did this before on other deployments.  It was very motivational and a good way to stay in touch daily.  I have been thinking what is a realistic goal that is doable with my limitations.  The last time I weighed myself was on May 29th and I was 233.8 lbs.  I have alway wanted to get back to 180 lbs. but I know that is unrealistic.  So to keep it realistic I will set my goal at 23.8 lbs. for the first 5 months.  I know that is quite a loss in 5 or so months but if I work hard at it I can do it.  That's 4.76 lbs. a month or a little over a pound a week like most in the athletic and  medical field say is recommended.  Since I don't know what exercise will work for me I will start with the walking, riding my bike then work into some hiking and running.  I am losing so much muscle that I do need to lift some weights.  The meds. are finally starting to work so I will play it by ear on how intense I can get.  I think I will get started today and see how it goes.  I hope all of you will get on board so we can motivate each other.  later
